Dr. Green. Dr. Green. Please call maternity.

Dr. Green. Dr. Green. Maternity.” The hospital loudspeaker brought some reality to where I was as I stepped up to the desk at the emergency room.

“May I help you?” a woman in a white uniform politely asked.

“My name is Mr. Kelly, Jim Kelly. I’m here for my son?”

“Let me check,” the woman said, as she shuffled through a pile of papers on her desk. “Oh, yes, JB. He’s in room 4-D. Your wife is already there.”

I thanked the woman and ran down the hall. 4-A. 4-B. 4-C. 4-D. I stepped into the room and found Anna sitting on a chair next to the bed, and in the bed was JB. He was asleep with a bandage around his right arm.

“What happened?” I asked as I leaned over JB.

“That’s a good question, Jim,” Anna hissed. “I’d like to know exactly what happened. Maybe you can start explaining what a ten-year-old boy was doing wandering the streets by himself in the middle of the night.”

“Anna. I read to him last night. We had dinner. He went to bed. I went to bed. That’s all I know. He’s never snuck out of the house before. You know that. I couldn’t have known this would happen.”

“You never seem to know when much happens around you.”

“Now that’s not fair. I do the best I can.”

“Well, obviously ‘the best you can’ gets your son a bruised arm.”

“How did it happen?”

“He said that he fell off a deer.”

“What?”

“JB made up another one of his stories and said that he fell off a deer. He said that he was behind the hardware store on the back of that filthy creature you pulled off the highway last week. Anyway, that’s JB’s story. He said he was riding the deer, then he slipped off and hurt his arm.”

“And you don’t believe that?”

“Jim, he also said that he and the deer were flying around the oak tree.”
